ROMA days 77-84

As I end my semester abroad I just wanted to take the time to look back at all the wonderful memories I made, friends I found, and the place I called home for the past three months. It’s been a whirlwind adventure here in Europe and as today started I found myself thinking about how I could not believe it had already been three months. It doesn’t feel real to me. I still don’t feel like I should be done with another semester of college and I can’t believe that there are some friends that I have made that I will be saying goodbye to for forever. I have friends staying here for next semester and friends going back to school at Villanova. I have met some pretty amazing girls and I am proud to call them my friends. As the Christmas Banquet came to a close and I walked in front of the Pantheon for the last time it hit me. There is a chance that I may never be able to get back here, and if I do it will never be the same. I would never be back here with my Smicks or with my new friends from the V. Walking into Pascucci’s for the last time I couldn’t help it but to cry a little with some of my friends. If I do return I would never get a cappuccino or chocolato caldo from Salvatore because he is moving to London. I will never be able to just go for a walk with Caitlin over to Frigadarum for gelato. I will never be able to hang out with the amazing deacons and seminarians who led God Squad. The list goes on and on. And even as I write this I can’t help but to feel my heart sink with every word I write and feel the tears roll down my cheeks. I am so blessed to have been able to spend the past three months with some of the most amazing people on this earth. Even though there were some mishaps thrown in there every once and a while…missing my flight…cough, cough…we still made it through and I could not imagine an better group of people to do this with. This past semester was everything I was looking for and some and I cannot thank God enough for how he has blessed me.

ROMA days 70-76

Well as I am nearing the end of the semester and finals are right around the corner I felt like I had so much to do in the past few days. This past weekend my friend Cathy (the one that is studying abroad in Dijon, France) came to Rome for the weekend. So I spent the weekend showing he all the sights of Rome. We went to Trevi, the Spanish steps, the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, Via Del Corso, and even made it to the Audrey Hepburn exhibit in the Ara Pacis museum. Not to mention going to the Angelus said by the Pope on Sunday. She had so much fun here and it was great to see her. But that wasn’t the only Pope action I had this week. Yes folks I had the chance to see the pope again this week. Dr. Prebys got tickets for all students who wanted to go to the Papal audience this past Wednesday. I went with two of my roommates and some of our friends. This might be one of my favorite things I have done since I’ve been abroad. At the Angelus the English speaking priest announced all the people who were present at this audience and my school was announced! It was incredible. I took a video and I am willing to relive this moment with whoever wants to see it if you don’t mind how shaky it is because my hands were shaking so bad. After the audience Lindsey, Alex, and I ended up taking pictures with a member of the Swiss Guard and talked to him for a little bit. That is 3 things that I can officially check off my bucket list for life. And now that I am at the end of my semester I am currently sitting in my room taking a short break from studying for my 5 finals that start on Saturday and continue until Tuesday. But after Tuesday I am free for 2 days in Roma to live out to the fullest!!!!!!

Roma days 59-69

This week we just had 3 days of classes. That was because the school gave us Thursday off for Thanksgiving even though it doesn’t happen in Italy. For lunch on Wednesday the hotel made us a Thanksgiving dinner. It was not what I expected at all, but it was a lot of fun. One of my professors told us it would be set up in Harry Potter dining hall style with the table of all of the Professors and administrators in the front and we sat at other tables in the dining room. I had a lot of fun but I really could have used some good old American Thanksgiving food. That night Alex and I got on a night train to PARIS! We were so excited! The train ride felt like it lasted forever. It was a night train so I mean it was going to be long but what ended up happening was the train was an hour and a half late. We were not happy about that. But when we finally got to Paris Alex and I set off on foot to try and find out first stop. After walking for a while with our backpacks we decided that taking the metro for the rest of the weekend would be a good choice. We finally made it to the Luxemburg gardens. They were so pretty. I love just being able to walk through gardens here in Europe but they will never compare to having trees everywhere back at home. After that we bought some metro tickets and took the metro as close as we could to our hotel and walked the rest of the way to our hotel. After we found the hotel, got checked in and paid for it we were off to the metro again to go to Notre Deme. The metro in Paris is really easy to navigate. Alex and I had no problem with it. We then walked around the Latin Quarter a little and I got my little sister’s Christmas present! I am so excited about it and I am sure she is going to love it! We then went and got dinner. I ended up getting an omelet and let me tell you. It was one of the best ones I have ever had. We each go a sweet crepe to go and decided to walk over to the Bastille because it was right between where we were and out hotel. I was a little disappointed because it was just a statue for it in the middle of a roundabout but hey at least I saw it. We then walked the rest of the way back to our hotel. Once we got in our room Alex and I immediately got our internet working. I told my family I would try and skype them on Thanksgiving so I wanted to make sure I got on in time to be able to do that. I was finally able to skype my family and it was so great to mot only be able to see just my parents, brothers and sister but also one of my aunts, some cousins, and one of my uncles. It was a lot of fun. My mom even made sure I got to be a part of the Thanksgiving toast said by my great uncle and I got the chance to see my cousin Kevin with his new wife! Although it did make me a little more homesick it just made me a lot more excited for seeing everyone this Christmas.  After I was done skyping Alex and I decided to watch a Christmas movie it might have been one of the best ideas we had had in a while. It was so much fun. On Friday we had a big day. We got up around 8:30 got ready and went to the metro. We took the metro to the big mall in Paris (sorry I don’t remember the name..) and did a little shopping. The best part was the enormous tree in the middle of the store. I might have been the biggest tree I had ever seen and I was covered in lights and lit up already. It was fantastic! After that we grabbed a quick lunch and headed off to the train station on the northern part of Paris. it was time for Alex’s Christmas present to me. She decided since we had both been to both Italy and France we needed a new country so she bought us tickets to go to Brussels Belgium! It was so exciting! So we took the train to Brussels and started off. We took the metro there and it once again was so easy. We headed to the center of town and saw everything we could. First we went to the comic strip museum. It was a lot more fun that I thought it would be. We actually spend like 2 hours there. Then we did a little shopping on the main shopping street. After that we went back to the city center and saw that it was all set up for Christmas! This made both me and Alex so happy because Rome is not ready for Christmas at all. There were lights everywhere and Christmas music playing. It was so great! Then we decided to see the main attraction in Brussels. There is a fountain that is called Mannakin Pis…I’m sure you can figure out what it does just by the name, but since it was such a big deal we decided to find it. It was like a scavenger hunt to find the stupid statue. We even stopped and asked some police, in our best French, where it was. Finally we made it to where it was supposed to be and it was so small. I mean after so many people made such a big deal about it you would think that it would be more than 12 inches tall. After that we decided to get some dinner and I’m sure you can guess what we got. Yes that is correct we had waffles! I missed breakfast food so much so this just made my mood even better. They were so good and actually pretty cheap for what we got. Then we decided to head back to the center of town. On our way back I think we made a wrong turn but it turned out for the better. We made it to where the palace was in Brussels and there was a gigantic Christmas tree with a huge nativity scene. There was also a light show going on. It was all so cool. We also found out after that that there was a Christmas market just down the street! We were in heaven and practically ran down the road to the market. It was so pretty. There were lights everywhere and people singing and selling ornaments. Ahh so good! After we finished in the Christmas market we decided to get a snack before we went to the train station to get on our train back to Paris. We got something that was born in Brussels once again and this was French fries. We saved them until we got to the train station to eat but they were really good. We then got on our train and made it back to our hotel safe and sound. When we got back to our room we went right to bed because tomorrow was another early morning. Saturday morning we got up at 8:30 again, got ready, jumped on the metro and went to the Louvre. At the Louvre we met our friend Cathy who is studying abroad in Dijon, France. It was so great seeing her. We hung out all day with her and that was just fantastic! We went through the Louvre and saw everything we wanted to see but since we had all been there before we didn’t spend more than 2 hours there. Then we walked through the Tuleries gardens. They were so pretty. I love gardens in Europe. After the gardens we got a quick lunch at a little café on the way to the Eiffel Tower. After lunch we headed to the next event of the day: the Eiffel Tower. Not only were we going up the Eiffel Tower but we were going all the way up to the summit! I had been up the Eiffel Tower before and that didn’t go very well so I was hoping it would go better this time. We were so excited. Alex had never been up the Eiffel Tower so she was a little nervous but she was still fine. Went all the way to the summit and saw all of Paris. it was so pretty and I absolutely loved it! Then we walked over to the Petit Palace. This was converted into a museum so that was pretty cool and the even better part was the fact that it was free to students. We were going to go to another museum but it was starting to get close to time for Cathy to get her train so we decided to walk her to the train station. The walk took a while but at least we knew that she made it to her train which was good. After we dropped her off Alex and I went to the grocery store to get some bread and cheese for dinner and some snacks for the train rides back to Rome all day Sunday. We then took the metro back to our hotel and just had a relaxing night in our room after we packed up all of our stuff. All day Sunday alex and I were on trains. Our first train went from Paris to Milan and that was from 7:40 until 2:50. Longest train of my life. Then we were supposed to get on another train that went from Milan to Rome at 4 but we going out that that train was canceled due to a train strike. So we ran and talked to some of the workers in the station. Since we had Eurail passes we could jump on the train that left at 3 for Rome. So we did and made it back to Rome at 6. It might have been one of the best weekends here. It was just so much fun to get out of Rome and to see Cathy! And now I only have 15 more days here before I am back home. I guess I’ll just have to make the most of it!

ciao bella!

ROMA days 43-58

School in the past two weeks has been pretty boring. Just the same old classes all day and sometimes lectures on Tuesday nights for our lectures and tours class. There has been some excitement though in the past 2 weeks. First on Tuesday November 8th the prime minister of Italy resigned. We then found out that next Tuesday that there was going to be a new prime minister maybe the next day. The Italians call him Super Mario. He is the exact opposite of the old prime minister. It turned out that he did become prime minister the next day. Well on Thursday that week there was a youth revolt. A huge youth riot walked down the street right in front of the hotel we are living in! It had a huge group of students and even a truck with speakers and people yelling about the new government and playing horrible 90’s music. It was really cool to be able to have a bird’s eye view of what was happening so to speak. The police completely shut down the street in front of the hotel so the students took over the whole street.  I went to Milan with Alex on Sunday and spent some money on clothes. It was really fun. We walked through the expensive stores and took pictures of them like tourist. Well that’s all the excitement for now!!

ROMA days 32-42

Sorry I’m absolutely terrible at updating this blog but here’s the rundown with the highlights from the past 10 days.

Wednesday-Thursday: these were just normal class days. Nothing really special went on here to be honest. Just plain old classes.

Friday Alex and I we didn’t have class for the first Friday since we had been in Rome. Alex and I decided to take this as a chance to go to Verona and Bologna. Verona was so beautiful. We went to Juliet’s house and took turns taking our picture on Juliet’s balcony. It was so much fun. We stopped and got some pizza at a little café before we did some window shopping down the shopping street. We ended up taking an earlier train to Bologna that we expected so we got the chance to see a church there that has been unfinished for over 300 years! It was so cool. We also took this chance to see if we could find the University of Bologna. We ended up finding it and I was not really impressed with it to be honest. We had a nice sit down dinner off of the main piazza because Bologna is famous for their food. I had tortelloni and Alex had lasagna. They were both fantastic and the workers there were fantastic! It was all in all a fantastic day

Saturday we had a trip to Palastrina and Tivoli. This involves going to a museum that was a house and then getting some lunch to go before we had one of the highlights of my trip so far. You know the part in the Lizzie McGuire Movie where she goes to the gardens with Paolo well you guessed it WE WENT THERE! It was so fantastic! I felt like I was Lizzie and it was amazing. All of the girls were having a field day with it and I think even the 3 guys had fun there. After that we went to the sanctuary of Fortuna Premigeria. This had been transformed into a museum but there were still many of the main parts of the shrine present like a well. Professor DeSena told us that when you came to the shrine you would confront a priest with a question and in order to answer it they would lower a young boy into the well and when he was at the bottom he would grab a wood tablet with an answer on it. They would then bring the boy back up and the priest would answer the question according to what the tablet said. When the question was answered they would when send the boy back down the well to put the tablet back. He followed up telling us this with turning to one of the guys in my tour group and asked if he was ready to go down in the well. It had to be one of the funniest things I had ever seen. The professor did a fantastic job with making jokes with the group. He was fantastic.

Sunday my roommate Caitlin and I spent some time together. We got up and got so lunch together then walked back to our room. The walk there and back was full of wonderful conversation about our lives in general. It was a great time to get to know her. After lunch we got to studying for out anthropology midterm hardcore. We were both so worried about it and we worked our tails off studying. We went to mass together that night and got some food to go on our way back to our room. I finished off the day with a wonderful skype date with my family. That is the highlight of my Sundays. I love the weekly skype dates I have with my family. We usually talk for around an hour and a half and I get the chance to talk to both of my parents, my sister Madeleine, and if I’m luck my brothers Jon and Thomas. That is always a great time.

Monday I had my anthropology midterm but before we get there I got my philosophy midterm back and I got an A- on it! I was so proud of myself. Well the anthro midterm wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I mean it was hard but I feel pretty confident about it right now. I also finished up and printed out my notes for my two presentations I had while I was going to be in Southern Italy. That night I went to a vigil mass for the Holy Day, All Saints Day, with my friend Jenni and we got some dinner after. This was followed by a much needed gelato date with my roommate Caitlin and Jenni to de-stress about the anthro midterm. It was a good time. When Caitlin and I got back to our room we packed with Alex and Lindsey for the next 5 days. These days were going to be spent in Southern Italy. Caitlin and I had a huge laugh attach and we went to bed. Waking up at 6 the next morning was going to be rough…

Tuesday we got up at 6 to start our journey to southern Italy. The main event for Tuesday was going to Pompeii, and my first of 2 presentations. Pompeii was amazing! I had always wanted to go there so I guess it was a plus that we got to go there. The only thing that made it better was the fact that we had my favorite professor for the tour: Dr. Hansen. She is amazing! I have never wanted to be so much like someone in my life. And I’m not the only one; everyone in the class feels the same. She is just so cool. She makes anything interesting whit her sayings. For example you could be looking at just a simple portical hallway (columned hallway with a roof) and all she has to do is call that portical “dead sexy” and it’s that much better. My presentation went really well and Dr. Hansen was really pleased with it. That made me feel really great about it. After seeing all of Pompeii we piled in the bus to go to Naples where our hotel was. We would not know our roommates there until we got there and they knew how many of each room there was. I ended up rooming with 2 girls, Allie and Grace, who I didn’t know really well but I was really excited. They were both really sweet. We got dinner with 3 other girls and it was a fantastic pizza! Then everyone who we got dinner with went back to our room to just talk for a while. It was a great chance to get to know some of the girls better. By the end of the night I felt like I knew Allie and Grace for years.

Wednesday we were supposed to go to the Naples Archaeological Museum but it turns out it was closed for the day. So we went on to what we were going to do in the afternoon. We drove about an hour and a half to Cuma which is where the Aneid takes place. I have never read it but the students in the mythology class did and some of then gave presentations about the story. This was ok. I wasn’t really into hearing about mythology because I don’t really like it but it was a cool place. We took tons of pictures when we got up to the top because the view was amazing. When we were done at Cuma we went back to Naples via the Santa Lucia waterfront and had our free afternoon we were going to have on Friday. That was fun. I went with some friends into an old castle right on the water’s edge. The best part of it was the face that it was free. I then went with some friends to find the way to the train station then back to our hotel. Why did we find the train station you may ask? Well that is because Grace had to take a train back to Rome because on Thursday morning she was going to fly from Rome back to the states for her brother’s wedding. She was a little stressed out about traveling by herself but I told her if I could do it she could do it. And I think that helped her some. Once we dropped her off at the train station we went to the fruit stand across the street and bought some fruit and then to the grocery store down the street from the hotel to get some bread and nutella. We then went back to our room and had a feast of bread, nutella, and grapes. It was so good. And not to mention how cheap it was. We then had another fantastic chat. These nightly chats were probably the highlights of my nights in Naples.

Thursday we had the most beautiful drive of my life. We drove the entire Amalfi coast with one stop for about an hour and a half for lunch. This drive was so beautiful. I’m pretty sure I took about a hundred pictures of it because of its beauty. It was amazing our bus made it through all of the twists and turns of the coast. After we drove the entire Amalfi coast we went to Paestum. Paestum was pretty cool. It had a lot of ruins from temples and houses and anything else you could think of. After we walked the ruins we went to the museum that was by the ruins. The museum wasn’t really interesting but it has some cool parts. After the museum we got back on the bus. When we got back to Naples it was time for dinner and Caitlin and I decided to go eith some other frineds to the pizza place where they filmed a scene from the movie Eat. Pray. Love. We were so excited and it was a lot of fun once we found it and in the same fashion as Julia Roberts we ate a whole pizza each. It was fantastic! After dinner we went back to the hotel and I got back to my room in time for our nightly chat.

Friday was our big museum day. We started off by going to the Naples Archaeological Museum where I gave my second presentation. It went a lot better than I thought it would but I’m not completely sure how well it went. After we finished in the museum we had about 2 and a half hours of free time. This made me and a few other girls mad. We had packed a lunch and it was on the bus which we couldn’t get on the bus to get our food so we sat in the museum for some of it and walked down the street for a while before we just sat on the steps outside of the museum and waited to get on the bus. After that we went to the next museum. This was the Capodimonte Museum. This was a house that was converted into a museum. It was really pretty cool. It had a ton of paintings in it and when you got onto the first floor it had some of the rooms still set up how they would have been back when there were people still living in the house. After we finished there we went back to our hotel and I had another fantastic dinner on bread and nutella and fruit with some of the girls. We then had the longest chat we had had all week. It was such a fantastic time. I love the life chats I had with these girls because it makes me feel so much closer to them. It was just a great time and way better that being on the sketchy streets of Naples.

Saturday we were supposed to go to Capri but when we got to the port we found out that there was a huge storm on the way to Naples and they were not allowing any boats out of the port for the entire day. I was a little bummed that we weren’t going to get to go to Capri but on the other hand we got to go back to Rome right then. We got back to Rome by 10:30 and spent the entire day in out room back at Rome. It was a great time to relax before the next week. Now time to work on my paper that’s due on Thursday and to study for my Art History misterm on Wednesday.

Ciao bella!!

ROMA days 24-31

Sorry it’s been a while since my last update!
Tuesday-Friday: Nothing really special happened this school week, just plain old classes and wondering the streets of Rome. The only significant thing that happened this week was the horrible thunder storms we got on Thursday. Thursday Caitlin and I have an 8 AM class with our 9:30 Italian class right after. Well when we were getting ready for class we knew that it was raining but we didn’t think it was too bad. Not true! We walked out of the building and were immediately soaked through our rain jackets. Caitlin’s umbrella didn’t even make it to the corner to cross the street. The worst part was the fact that we had to sit in our soaking wet clothes for the next 4 hours of class. It was horrible and I think that is why I now have a cold. It was not a fun morning. The weather was a complete damper on my mood for that day. There is just something about getting completely soaked that just makes a person upset.
Saturday: on Saturday we went to Tarquinia and Civervelteri. I thought this was going to be a very boring day going to tombs and just hearing what I studied in both my anthro and art history classes again but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Although we had to get a horrible wakeup call from the hotel at 6AM it was an all in all good day. We found out on the bus ride over that we were going to stop at a beach for an hour and a half in the middle of the day so we were all pretty excited about that. Well we went to Tarquinia first. It was only about an hour and a half bus ride there so that wasn’t too bad. When we got there and split up into our groups for the tour I found out that we had out amazing anthro professor for the tour! It made the tour even better just because she adds in her random “Dead sexy” quotes. It was fantastic! We went into as many of the open tombs as we could. After the tombs we got on a bus to a museum in the city center and even that wasn’t too bad which is a great improvement from our last museum we went to. After the museum we had 20 minutes to get some lunch and be back at the bus to go to the beach! We were so excited! It had warmed up a lot by the time we got there so that was another good thing about it. W=once we got there we were like kids in a candy store! We went crazy taking off our shoes, rolling up our jeans, walking the beach, getting in the water. You name it we did it. I took so many pictures with friends and of friends. It was just a blast! For sure the best part of the weekend. We were at the beach for about an hour and a half and by the time we had to leave we were not ready for the next tour. It took us about 45 minutes to get to Civervelteri. There we changed our tour leader to the art history professor so I thought it wouldn’t be as good. As it turned out that tour was pretty fun. One of girls in my group actually said that she felt like Indiana Jones when we were going in the tombs. They were gross, creepy, and cool all at the same time. We had to climb all over the place. It was a really fun trip in general. 2 of the girls in my group decided to lay down where they would have put bodies to decay and took a picture there pretending to be dead. It was hilarious! After we got back to the hotel and everyone was so exhausted from the day. I wanted to go to scholars to watch some of the ND vs USC game but that didn’t start until around 1:30 AM so that didn’t happen. We just had a relaxing night in and hung out with some friends.
Sunday: Today it was back to the world of studying. I sykped my dad in the morning (In Indiana) because the internet was really bad in our hotel and was most likely going to go out before the night cams so I wouldn’t be able to skype my mom and brothers. I ended up going with Alex to this chicken fast food place that was kind of like a KFC to get some lunch. Then we came back to do some studying before mass at 8:00 PM in our SMC chapel. After mass Caitlin and I went out for gelato then went back to the room. I had enough internet to be able to skype chat my mom but that was it. It wasn’t as good as hearing my family’s voices but it was better than nothing.
Monday and Tuesday: Today was just plain old school. Midterms are all in the next couple of weeks depending on the class so a lot of review was happening. I had a religious studies quiz/test on Tuesday and it had to be the easiest religion test I had ever taken! Tonight I’m studying for my philo midterm that is tomorrow. That is not going to be a fun test but I don’t think it is going to be too bad, mostly because im sure the professor will not want to grade them. Well that’s all for now! Maybe I’ll get better at this whole updating my blog thing!!

ciao bella!!

ROMA days 20-23

Friday I had an Italian test. I really don’t know how it went but it’s in the past and there is nothing I can do about it now. The highlight of my Friday was spent in my room. What was I doing you may ask. Well first on Caitlin’s Itunes the song What Dreams Are Made Of from the Lizzie McGuire Movie came on and we had a mini dance party to it. Then I decided to see if I could watch it on youtube. It turns out that you can watch it in 9 minute segments. Finding this out made my life! Caitlin and I watched it and the whole time we pointed out the things that were wrong about Italy in it. It was so funny! The rest of Friday was just a religious studies class and getting ready to go to Venice on Saturday.
On Saturday Alex and I got up early to get to the train station for our 7:45 train. We got word on Friday that there were going to be some form of riots in Rome on Saturday starting at 9 at the train station and going into the afternoon so we were glad that we left way before they started. I love Venice. When we got there the first thing we decided to do was make sure we had tickets to get back to Rome. Once we had the tickets we were free to wonder where ever we wanted. We first got something to eat for lunch and yes I’m sure you guessed what we got: pizza. The pizza was easy and quick and not to mention how good it was! Every place in Italy has different pizza and it’s all so good! After we got the pizza we wondered around the islands of Venice. Every way you look there is another view of something different. It was all so beautiful! We went to a gallery, found a free museum that showed some of Vivaldi’s instruments he taught to his students, the Doge’s Palace, piazza de San Marco, and even the church Vivaldi taught students at when he was a priest. It was so much fun. We went into so many mask shops. You wouldn’t even believe how many are there! I wanted to get a mask but I got one the last time I was there and how many do you really need in your life, right? We wondered all of the islands and did not get lost once. We got our train back and when we got back to the hotel we checked out email to find emails from family asking if we were alright because of the riots. We even saw CNN news reports online about it! It was crazy. We sent word to our families that we were alright and that it was all done before we got back to Rome.
On Sunday it was a really relaxing day. We woke up and got some food, and yes we did end up caving in and got not only American food but McDonalds. It was so nice to have American food, as bad as that sounds and it was even cheaper that other food would have cost us. We went back to our room and just had some down time to put up pictures and just relax before I went to mass with some other friends. I went to mass at the same church I went to last week. After mass this week I decided to look at some of the chapels around the main part of the church. I almost died when I saw that one of the chapels had the remains of St. Catherine of Siena for hundreds of years after she died. I was named after her because that was the church my family used to go to when they lived in Illinois. When I got back after dinner I told my mom on skype and she freaked out as much as me. I ended up skyping with my family for about an hour and a half. It was great! After that I just relaxed and got ready for my school week.
Today was just a typical Monday. The only difference was that Professor Checca is here for the week with his wife! I love Checca! He saved me when I ended up missing the bus to Assisi. He sat in on 3 of my classes today and that made them even better. The only other thing that happened today was the start of this thing called God squad. It’s something that was started here by our RA Miss McHugh made for us to get together and just talk about our religion with some deacons and seminarians. There were about a dozen of us girls there and it was a lot of fun tonight. We also found out that since they are studying at the Vatican they might be able to get us a tour of both the Vatican and the crypts for either free or a reduced price. I am so excited about this! Well that’s all for tonight!

ciao bella!

ROMA days 15-19

Sorry it took me forever and a day to post some more but this week so far has been pretty boring. Everyone including Bethany is still on a high from her engagement! The word even got out to the workers at Pascucci’s. They now refer to her as fiancé. We told professors in classes and even spent 20 minutes talking about it in Italian. It’s almost surprising how some news like that can put you in such a great mood. I would only say the only downer to this week so far is seeing my family talk about my cousins wedding on facebook. My cousin is coming home from Japan to get married in less than a month and staying for thanksgiving with the rest of my family. I’m so sad that I won’t be able to be there for it! My cousin that is in Cali is even coming to the wedding and I haven’t seen him in years and not to mention met his wife and new born baby. Other than that it’s been a pretty good week. We have a Tuesday class make up day tomorrow so I have Italian at 9:30 tomorrow morning, not only Italian but an Italian test. Yuck! Not looking forward to it at all. At least I have this weekend to look forward to! Alex and I are going to Venice for the day. I love Venice and I can’t wait to go! But I’ll tell you about that after we go there!

ciao bella!

ROMA days 13&14

Saturday: Today Alex and I went to Florence. We got up at 5:30 to get ready and get some food from Pascucci’s before we got on the 6:30 buss to the train station. We thought our train was a direct train from Rome to Florence but when we got there we found out that those were an extra 20 euros. We did not want to spend that money so we asked someone at the desk what train we should take and it turns out that we need to take the train that would go to Milan but made stops in several cities. We also found out that we had to be in the standing room only. I guess that wasn’t too bad it you think about it. We never wanted to be in standing room again so we decided to book tickets for the other trains so we would have seats so that is all settled. We also found out that when we got to the Florence station we had to take a 5 minute train that would take us to the station in the middle of the town. That was easy. We got to Florence at about noon so Alex and I decided to get something cheap to eat. We found this little fast food kind of place and go the most amazing pizza I have ever had in my life. The one slice we each got was the size of our heads. But it was so fantastic! After we got the pizza we set off to find Il Duomo. On our way we found all these adorable little shops. We went in a few and Alex even got a super cute skirt in one. When we found Il Duomo we decided that we didn’t want to wait in line to go in all day so we didn’t end up seeing inside. We then set off to find the museum that had Michelangelo’s statue David. On the way we went in all of the leather shops we could find. The best one we went in had an adorable old man in it who sold Alex a wallet for her dad. He said the one of the best things we had heard in a while. He said “For your father 25, for your boyfriend thousands.” He gave Alex a 60% discount for her wallet because it was on sale but it was also for her dad. He was hilarious. Went we made it to the museum the line was so long! Alex and I thought that we weren’t going to get in. we went to the ticket office and decided to try to reserve a time slot for us to go to the museum. I turned out that the next available time slot was in 15 minutes at 1. How could you resist something like that? It was almost like the museum wanted us to go to it. So we decided to go into a few other shops before our museum slot. We went in this little shop where this man was making leather bracelets foe 1 euro. I loved them and couldn’t resist! That’s how I got my leather from Florence, a 1 euro purple leather bracelet. I love it. The museum was really cool! I’ve seen David before but there is nothing like seeing him again. He is huge! After the museum I successfully navigated my way to the straw market from my memory of going 2 years ago. It was packed. Alex got a leather backpack and I got to take a picture just like my one 2 years ago with the pig. You rub its nose for good luck. I had to do this not only for myself but also for my parents. I might as well just make it a tradition if I ever make it back there again. After the straw market we made our way to the piazza that had the fake David statue and a lot of other replicas. It was so crowded that we really didn’t stay there for too long and decided to make our way down a side street to the less touristy part of Florence. We got some fantastic gelato. I got vanilla and tiramisu and Alex got coffee and caramel. It was so good! We made our way down the street looking at the little shops. Alex got some fantastic boots for 100 euro (way out of my price range for anything). We even found a little record shop. It was so cool. The best part was that it was playing the Beetles. Shout out to my friends back at goo old SMICK, Schmid in Cali, and Cathy in France because that is like our favorite band ever. It made me miss them so much! After that we went to Santa Croce to look at it. It was 5 euro to get in but it was totally worth it. Inside were the graves of Galileo, Michelangelo, and a ton of other well-known people. Alex was basically freaking out the whole time we were there. After we finished in the church we were just going to catch an early train back to Rome and just get dinner there but when we got to the train station we saw that were was a train leaving for Siena in 5 minutes and we decided to just go there for dinner. It was spur of the moment but so much fun! We got there, got some dinner, and got the next train back to Rome. We got back to Rome at around 11 PM and back to our hotel by like 11:30 PM. Right when I got back I wanted to talk to my brothers about this trip but none of them were online and that made me a little mad.  I just figured that they were at mass or something.
Sunday: There was only one thing that really happened today so I didn’t want to make a whole post for a few sentences. One of the girls went to Greece for the weekend to visit her boyfriend from Notre Dame who is studying abroad there and they got ENGAGED!! It might be the most exciting thing that has ever happened on the Rome program with SMC. We are all so excited for her and her fiancé! I can’t wait to meet him in 2 weeks when he comes to Rome to visit her.  Well that’s all that really happened today. Oh yeah and Congrats to the new Mrs. Sara O’Hara!! I figured out where my family was. They were at a wedding for one of our family friends daughters. I really wanted to go but maybe I can go to their other daughters or their oldest sons in the next year.

ciao bella!

ROMA day 12

Today was just another slow day in paradise. It was a Wednesday class makeup day so I had another 8 AM philo class. After philo Alex and I headed to the train station once again so Alex could get her spot on the train to Paris saved and her seats to Zurich saved also. After that we came back to the hotel and had some down time until our tour at 2. This tour was the worst tour I had even been on ever. We walked like 3 miles to the edge of town to go to Villa Giulia. I thought it would be really cool because it was the place where popes used to live here but it was not good at all. We spent 2 hours looking at pottery from 600 BC and it was horrible. After the tour I went back to my room for some down time before dinner. It was TIziano dinner night. Those are the best! The workers who serve us our food are fantastic. They are just like family. They are just so nice to us and the food isn’t half bad either. After dinner we went back up to our room and got everything ready to get up at 5:30 the next morning to go to Florence. Alex and I are going to Florence for the day just to have some fun. I can’t wait!

ROMA day 11

Today once again was a boring morning. I had another 8 AM religious studies class follower by a 9:30 Italian class. The good thing was that was the end of classes for me for the day. Caitlin and I got some lunch to go from Pascucci’s and went back to our room. I ended up watching an episode of New Girl online and then just had a lazy afternoon hanging out in our room until Alex got out of class at 2:20. Alex and I had to go to the train station to set up our train passes and get our beds reserved for our train to Paris. To do this we had to take our first bus in Rome. I was really nervous about taking the bus but it turned out not being too bad. It only took us about 20 minutes to get there. When we got to the train station we had to figure out where we had to go to set everything up with our Eurail pass. We ended up finding someone that worked in the train station that answered our questions about our passes and told us what lines to go in. We had to get in this huge line to get everything fixed. The line ended up going pretty fast though. When we got to the front we got everything fixed and paid for our beds to be reserved. We will be in a 6 person cabin with 4 other people. I’m not too afraid about being in there with 4 other people because we took the same type of train to Paris from Venice with my dance studio. Alex and I decided that we wanted to have the top bunks because who is going to climb up there to try to steal out stuff. We go the next bus back to our hotel and I went back to the room for some more down time until dinner. After dinner I just went back to my room. Like I said it’s just been a really relaxing day. I think I’m going to watch Across the Universe tonight. Hopefully it won’t make me miss my Smicks too much.

ciao bella!!

ROMA days 9 and 10

Tuesday: Today nothing exciting really happened. I got up and had class from 9:30 until 11:30 was done with classes for the day. After Italian I went with Caitlin to find the post office because she had some post cards and a birthday card to her dad to mail. The post office here is so intimidating. We walked in and had no idea what were supposed to do. So we left after looking dumb for 20 minutes and got some lunch to go at Pascucci’s. I was going to go back to our room to get some reading I had to do for tomorrow and come back to the library to do it but when I got to the room they were cleaning it so I couldn’t go in. so I just went to the library and got on the computer for a half hour before going back to a clean room…at least we thought it was going to be clean. When I got back to the room Caitlin was already there and she had started a list of things that were not good about our “freshly cleaned” room. They didn’t dust anything, put a wad of hair in the toilet, and didn’t even sweep the floor. We were really mad about this. Sadly there was nothing we could do about it so we will just have to hope for better next week. After dinner Alex and I decided to go on a walk to see Castle St. Angelo and the Vatican at night all lit up. This walk was fabulous. It’s about a 20 minute walk to the Vatican if you walk really fast but Alex and I weren’t so I think it took a little longer. We made there and tool tons of pictures. They are both so pretty! I love going to see places both at night and during the day because they look so different. We found a cheap gelato place and got some fantastic gelato and walked back home. When we got home we had to finish our budget. Doing things like this just makes me feel sick. I didn’t know if I wanted to know how much money it would cost me for the next 10 weeks or not. But we finished. I had the worst headache from it but I’m glad we did it so I know that I can’t buy anything until after finals if I have money then. None of us were tired and we had to force ourselves to go to bed when 2 came around. When we turned off the light we couldn’t stop laughing about stupid things we were saying. Lindsey started to take quotes down on her iPod so we could laugh at them when we got up Wednesday. It was a fun night but we needed some sleep because three of us had an 8 AM class Wednesday.
Wednesday: Getting up today was horrible. We only had like 4 and a half hours of sleep by the time we got up. When we got to philo we found out that we were watching a movie so we were excited. This movie was so gross. It was probably the most disgusting movie I had ever seen. We have to finish it in class on Friday which I am not looking forward to at all. After philo Lindsey, Alex and I came back to our room and fell asleep until 12. Alex was meeting her aunt’s friend at Pascucci’s for lunch at 1:30 and I was going to go with her. We were secretly hoping that she will adopt us for the weekend and cook for us but we have no idea if she will. I had class from 2:20-5:30 after lunch and I was not looking forward to it at all. We were talking about the same things in both my anthro and art history classes and it was going to be so boring. It ended up not being as bad as I thought it would be. The 2 classes ended up going a lot faster that I thought they would and I found out that instead of having class on Friday we are going to a museum. I’m pretty excited for this. After class I went back to my room. Lindsey and Caitlin were trying to come up with a dance scene from a movie that they could do and tape to send to some of their friends. It was hilarious watching them trying to pick out what they wanted to do. They weren’t able to pick one so they didn’t do it yet but when they do I’m pretty sure it’s going to be fantastic! After dinner I came back up to the room ready to do my Italian. I actually got it done pretty quickly. The 4 of us in the room checked each other’s and I’m pretty confident with my work. After the Italian was done Alex and I tried to figure out how to book our seats/beds for our train to Paris over thanksgiving. We figured out that we couldn’t do it online and that we are going to have to go to the train station tomorrow to do it with someone that works there. I’m glad we are getting this all done now so we won’t have to worry about it when it gets closer. I ended my night with watching some Glee. Yes that’s right Alex found a way to watch American TV online. I was so excited! It really helped with my homesickness to get to watch some Glee. I can’t wait to watch some more over the next 10 weeks. We also found out that we only have 10 weeks left in Italy including this week that’s over half done now. I can’t decide if I’m sad about this or excited to be going home soon. Oh well, I guess that’s something to be thought about another day!

ROMA day 8

Today was just another Monday. I got up and had class at 11 and went to class had lunch in the Tiziano and went back to have classes until 7 that night. When I got back to my room I wasn’t feeling the greatest. It wasn’t like a sick feeling more like a sad feeling. I was starting to get that homesick feeling you would most likely get when you were away from home for about a month. I had never really been homesick in my life and I really didn’t like that feeling. But I couldn’t focus on this right now. Alex and I were going to work out a budget for all of our trips put together. Today I really didn’t have the patience for this. I wasn’t feeling like myself and I didn’t want to look through stupid books for stuff to do when we were traveling. Honestly at the moment I really didn’t even want to go anywhere because I was feeling too worried about money and about traveling with just one other person. I was already nervous about these trips and I really didn’t want to think about them tonight. But I did help Alex with budgeting everything. I think she knew that something was up but when she asked me I just said I was tired…I know classic excuse, right? It was kind of true I guess. I was a little tired today. I buried myself in the books she had and started to look up things to do in Florence, Venice, Milan, Verona, and Paris. We booked our hostel for Paris because that is the only time we will be overnight somewhere, but we didn’t actually finish getting the prices for everything because we were both very frustrated with the budget system. Alex relaxed with watching some American TV shows she bought on iTunes. I, on the other hand, did not know what to do. Alex copied some of the shows on a flash drive and gave them to me so I could watch them so I did that for a little bit. That really didn’t help out though. When I got on facebook after that I saw my brother Jonathan online so I messaged him and talked to him for a little bit. The worst part about talking to him though was him leaving saying that he was going to have dinner and that just made me miss my mom’s cooking. I think I’m going to start to make a list of what food I want when I get home. Get ready mom there is going to be a huge list coming your way by December!

ROMA day 7

Today I got up at 8 with 2 of my other roommates. Why you may ask. Well today there was an optional trip to mass at St. Peter’s for mass. I was so excited that we were going to go to mass at St. Peter’s. Caitlin, Lindsey, and I got all ready and made it over to the class building by 9:30 to walk over with about 10 other girls to go to mass. When we got to St. Peter’s it was so packed. Mass didn’t start until 10 so we had a half hour. This was spent taking pictures from the enormous line we had to stand in before we even got close to getting in the church. This line had a set of metal detectors we had to go through before we got in another line that actually checked your clothes to make sure that they were appropriate to wear into the church. After we got through both check points it was almost a free for all to get into the church. We tried to stay together but once we got in we split up into a few smaller groups. I was with Caitlin, Lindsey, and our friend Kaitlyn. The mass wasn’t at the main alter. It was in the chapel of the chair. We were in in the standing room only and when we went to get closer there were guards that asked us where we were going. It kind of scared me. They would get in your face and say in a stern voice “where?” Obviously I didn’t understand what they were asking because I said something and walked on and they just looked at me. We got as close as we could in the standing room and listened to the mass in Latin. When we were walking over with Miss Mchugh she told us that we probably wouldn’t be able to receive communion. When the guards removed the red rope holding us in the standing room and told us we could go to receive communion I took off with Kaitlyn to get in a line. Luckily we were able to receive communion. I felt so holy. After mass we went outside. Miss McHugh also told us that the Pope does a blessing out of his window at 12 and that was only 15 minutes away so we decided to wait around for it. It was so cool to be blessed by the pope. My friends and I decided that even our clothes and jewelry were blessed. We got back to the room and made jokes about our Pope outfit and things like that. After that we just went back to the room and did some homework. We had a very relaxing Sunday. By night all 4 of us were on skype talking to our families. I think with all of us college students in the hotel we overwork the internet because it just kicked us off and we had to wait before we could get back on skype. It all turned out ok though. Well that’s all for now!

ROMA day 6

Today we had our first lecture and tour. We went to the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and the Colosseum. These were 3 vital places in early roman times. The forum was where all of Rome used to be. It had the Senate building, the places where little shops used to be. And even 3 temples to different gods. Although it was all in ruins, you could really envision what it used to look like. The tours were led by 2 of the professors I have in class and a man who used to teach with the Rome program. For the tour of the forum and Palatine Hill I had my anthropology professor. She really made everything I would never think was interesting easy to listen about. She told stories about what people would do in the different places back in early Rome. She did a great job at keeping everyone’s attention. After the forum we went up Palatine Hill and saw where supposedly Romulus and Remus lived. We also saw the first settlements of Rome. It was really cool to see that. We also where the palace made by one of the Flavian king was and the remains of it. It was the same family who build the Colosseum. After lunch we went to the Colosseum. I love the Colosseum. It has to be one of my favorite places in Rome. It is so much bigger that it seems on postcards. Even though I had been there before I think I was as excited as everyone else to get inside. For this tour I had the professor who doesn’t teach with SMC anymore. He was really cool too. He gave us a good history of the whole place and even waited around for about 10 minutes while we took pictures to finish our tour at the place where the gladiators used to train. After the tours everyone was so hot and tired. Did I mention that Rome is going through a heat wave right now and the hottest day of the week was today? We just wanted to get back to the hotel to shower and take naps. My roommates and I just ended up picking up some food and bringing it back to the room to eat and had a relaxing night in. Alex and I went on a walk to see if we could find a bakery that she found online. This bakery made American desserts and we really wanted some cheesecake. We found it in the Jewish Ghetto and it was open! Sadly the food wasn’t that great but hey we got a good walk out of it. We ended up just hanging out in our room talking and going to sleep early because Lindsey, Caitlin, and I are going to mass tomorrow morning at St. Peter’s basilica for mass.

ROMA days 4&5

Thursday: Today was a fantastic day! I was done with class by 11:35 today and had all afternoon free. I was so excited to get my stuff I just sat in my room for a few hours. I was getting worried that they weren’t going to come so I emailed my dad and asked him how long I should wait until I call the airport and make them bring my stuff over to the hotel. Just then Alex came into our room and asked me if I knew that my luggage was in the lobby. I was so excited! Alex went with me downstairs and helped me bring them upstairs and I got right down to unpacking. Surprisingly it only took me about an hour and a half to unpack and put everything away. I guess it was easier for me because everyone else had already put their stuff places so I knew where there was space for me. Unpacking was the greatest feeling of my life! I had never been so happy in my life. I was so excited that I got to shower with my own shampoo and soap and I got to put on clean clothes. It was fabulous. One of the down sides to my stuff being packed in space bags for a week and a half though was that everything was wrinkled when I took it out so I have a lot of ironing ahead of me. After dinner I went with some friends wondering around the city. We were trying to find this bakery that Alex found online that sold American desserts like cheesecake and stuff like that. We wondered and ended up finding it in the Jewish Ghetto. Sadly it was closed, but the cool thing was that there was a concert going on in some ruins that we found and watcher a little from a ways away. It was really fun. We took some pictures and had a blast talking about our days. Alex and I ended up going back to the hotel after that and having some fun with our other 2 roommates. I don’t remember if I said anything about this earlier but I bought a children’s toothbrush when we got to Rome and when Caitlin and Lindsey saw it they thought it was hilarious because it had a cat head that you put on the top when you weren’t using it. We decided to make a game in our room to hide the cat tooth brush around the bathroom but we didn’t want to put it anywhere gross until I got my toothbrush from my luggage. Well now that I have my luggage the game is on and it is going to be fantastic!
Friday: Well this 8 AM class thing is going to kill me for sure. Three days in a row with 8 AM classes is not fun. I was so tired for make-up classes today that I didn’t want to do anything during my 4 hour break before lunch at 1. I went to the library after my philo class to do my anthropology reading but when I got here the book I needed was already being used so I went back to my room where all of my roommates were sleeping and tried so hard not to fall asleep but that didn’t go over too well…I ended up falling asleep for about an hour and a half. After classes Alex and I were supposed to go and meet her aunt’s friend at a little café. She lived in Rome and Alex and I were kind of hoping that she would adopt us for the weekends and make us food sometimes. Well we went to where the directions told us the café was and we were so confused. All we could find was what looked like a museum and when we went in the museum there was some sort of wine tasting going on. We went to where the café was and awkwardly asked some ladies if they were who we were looking for but they were totally confused by what we were asking, obviously not her. So we waited around for about 15 or 20 minutes before we left. When we were walking back toward Piazza Novono we ran into a group of our friend who were going out for dinner. We decided to join them and we found this little place we decided to go to. The best part was that there was a deal on dinner for tonight. For 12 euros you got bread, a salad, a piece of bruschetta, a drink of any kind, and either a dish of pasta or a pizza. Who can deny that kind of deal? There were 10 of us at dinner and it was so much fun. I think we might have annoyed the waitress a little bit because we asked her to take some pictures of us but it was totally worth it. After dinner we wondered around Piazza Novono a little before we decided that we were going to go to Scholars tonight. We went back to the hotel to get ready and before we knew it we were walking down the street to Scholars. There was a live band there and it was a lot of fun. About 20 minutes after we got there a flood of students from our Rome program came if. It was great to just have some fun with all of the other guys and girls outside of a school atmosphere. We left at like 12:45 because we had to get up early Saturday morning for our first lecture and tour. It was a lot of fun just hanging out with a bunch of other college students from America who were also studying abroad. It was almost like a little bit of home.

ROMA day 3...now where are my suitcases?

Today I had to get up at 7:00 to get ready for class. I had my philosophy class at 8 and it was a killer getting to class. The best thing was that everyone else in class was just as tired as I was. Class actually went pretty fast. After class Alex, Lindsey, and I all went back to the room where Caitlin was already sleeping and fell asleep for a few more hours. Alex and I got up at 12 and went to get lunch and to read in the library. Well Alex had to do some reading for her history class and I got on the computer. After I was don’t on the computer Alex told me I should go and talk to Miss McHugh about my suitcases not being here yet. I went up to her office and started to tell her about how they still weren’t here. She went online and got the numbers for both United and Continental airlines at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Italy gave them to me and told me to take them to the man at the desk and have him call in front of me. By this point I was a mess. Crying because I couldn’t keep it in any longer, frustrated with the airlines because I wanted my stuff, and just upset because there was nothing I could do about it. So I took the numbers to the man at the desk and he called but there was no luck. The number once again went nowhere and we couldn’t find out any information about anything from them. So I went back to Miss McHugh’s office and told her that nothing was different and we went to talk to Dr. Prebys about it. Dr. Prebys got right down to work on trying to do whatever she could do to find my bags. Unfortunately I had to go to class so I had to wait until 5:30 to see if she found out anything. When I got back there after class Dr. Prebys said nothing was different. She said that she got a list of numbers that she had been calling and they found no record of my bags being in Europe at all. She told me to tell my dad to call united and demand money for me to buy some new things and to say that I was missing medication, clothes, school supplies and anything else he could think of so they would give us more money. She also said if my dad could see if my bags were in Newark and if they were to demand that they were to be sent here over night. I was so frustrated about all of this at dinner. I kept having people asking me if my stuff had arrived yet and I had to retell what had happened all day today to them. After dinner Alex and I decided to go for a walk. We ended up wondering all over the street that our hotel was on. We found Campo de Fiori, Piazza de Francese, and some old ruins. We also found a really cheap place to eat that we might go to this weekend. When we got home Alex looked at her facebook and my dad had sent her a message that said that they found my suitcases and that they were in Rome! I was so excited that I had to get online and see if I had any more information from my dad. He wrote that they were in Rom eon my wall and sent me an email with the new luggage tag numbers so I would have them for confirmation. I was so excited. I also got to skype one of my best friends at Saint Mary’s tonight. It was so fantastic to get to talk to Emily, even if it was just for a little bit. When I got off skype we got a phone call in our room and all of my roommates freaked out that it might have been my suitcases. When one of them answered and found out that it was for me I was so excited. When I got the phone I didn’t recognize that it was my mom on the phone. I had so much excitement that I didn’t even recognize my own mom’s voice. The first thing my mom said was that my suitcases were in Rome and that they would be delivered tomorrow! I’m so excited right now that I don’t think I can sleep. I can’t wait to have all of my stuff! Well that’s all for now! Hopefully good news tomorrow!

Ciao bella!

ROMA day 2

Today I only have one class. I have Italian from 9:35-11:35. Yeah that’s right 2 hours of Italian. That class might be the death of me. The worst part about being on the Rome program is having to take Italian class. Everyone here has to even the Villanova students who are here for an internship. I want their internship so bad. There are 3 computer science majors and 3 communications majors and their internship in is the Vatican. Yes you read correctly: the VATICAN! I’m so jealous of them! They have Italian tutoring at like 8 in the morning and their internship from 9:00-1:00 every day then have one class in the afternoon sometime. Well anyways back to what I did today. After Italian I when with my roommate Caitlin to try to find the post office. We walked around in a huge circle and never found one so we went back to meet some friends at Pascucci’s for lunch. After that I came back to the room and got to work doing homework for a few hours. The only homework I have in any of my classes is reading and by reading I mean a lot of reading. So I started with my philosophy reading. It made me want to fall asleep so I decided to pack up all of my work and walk down to the library to do some work. I sat in there for like 4 hours reading and being bored out of my mind! When I came back I went to dinner in the hotel with everyone else. I also asked the man as the desk if he had heard anything about my suitcases yet and he said no but it usually talked 3-4 days for suitcases to get here from the US. So that just ruined my night. I really wanted to have my bags here already. When I came back up to my room Alex and I decided that we were going to go on a walk to take pictures with the gnome toy she has. The gnome is actually her boyfriends but he let us bring it with us for the trip so we could take pictures with the traveling gnome. We went to the Pantheon and found our way to the Trevi Fountain. It was so crowded last night that I didn’t want to take pictures but I took a picture of Alex and the gnome. It was so cute. Then we got a small gelato to share and walked back to the hotel. On our way back we saw a huge group of people going out for the night. They were going to Scholars which is an Irish style pub that’s for Americans. On Tuesday nights they have karaoke night so they were going to see how it was. When we got back to our room my roommates saw the kid’s toothbrush I bought so I would have one. It is pink, has a cat on it, and the feet have suction cups on them. Caitlin and Lindsey decided that every day from now on it is going to be put in random spots in our bathroom. Caitlin wants be to get my toothbrush from my suitcases so she can put it in gross spots in our bathroom. The whole room cant wait until my stuff gets here.

ROMA Day 1

Today is Monday and you all know what that means! Classes start today. I have 4 hour and a half classes that go from 11:10-7:00 PM with a break from 12:45-2:15 for lunch. It is a really long day. Going from having nothing to do all day for over 4 months to classes for like 6 hours is not fun at all. I started the day with philosophy. The class was pretty good. I’ve heard so much about the class being easy that I was actually excited for it. The professor was really cool. Part was through the class he gave us a 5 minute break to ask him questions about whatever we want. It was really fun. After class we had lunch at Hotel Tiziano. Before I went to lunch I asked the man at the desk if he had heard anything about my suitcases and he said no. This really made me sad. All I wanted was some clean clothes, my hairbrush, makeup, and my notebooks for class. I was really tired of wearing the clothes I wore in Assisi. Lunch was really yummy. They gave us so much food! I would say the best part though was the fresh baked bread that we got with it. It was so good! After lunch I had anthropology. The anthro class in Rome is archeology and I was so excited to get in it and get it started! The professor from that class was so cool. She had the best British accent I had ever heard. I couldn’t believe that it was real. She had to leave the room in class to get a projector for her slide show. When she left everyone in the room said at once “Oh my God she is so cool!” She was great to listen to and class went really fast. The only bad part was that she went a little long with her lecture so I was late to my art history class. I was dreading going to art history. I had heard so many bad reviews from it back at SMC that I just didn’t want to think about taking it ever. Sadly I have to tank 2 semesters of art history to be an art major. This class went so slow. We took so many notes it was almost unreal. When class that class was finally done I had one last class for the day. My last class was religious studies. The professor for this class was a little old priest. He was so funny. He was making jokes right and left to the class and when he asked all of us our names he tried really hard to remember what they were. After this class I was finally done for the day. We were on our own for dinner for the night so Alex and I went over to Pascucci’s and used some of our coupons to get a sandwich. Then we went over to look at the pantheon again at night. After that we went to the grocery store because they have waters for 0.29 euros there. It is 1.5 liter water for only 0.29 euro! After that we went back to the room and had some roommate bonding time. That was really fun too. It was great to get to know the other 2 girls in our room then Caitlin set her alarm for 8:30 because we have a 6:30 Italian class on Tuesday. Well that’s all for tonight more on Tuesday!

Travel days and Assisi

Sorry this took me forever and a day to post. I didn't have internet in Assisi and there was so much to put in. Enjoy!

Travel days 1&2 (Tuesday and Wednesday):  I left my house with my dad Tuesday morning with a sense of nervousness. I didn’t know what to expect with flying by myself and on top of it all I had never been in an airport by myself.  We left Tuesday morning a little before 9 AM Indiana time (8 Chicago time or 3 PM Rome time) and made it to O’Hare international airport at around 11 AM Indiana time (10 Chicago or 5 PM Rome).  Saying goodbye to my family was so hard just thinking about saying goodbye to my dad once I got there was horrible.  He helped me get my two suitcases and two carryon bags out of the car and then sad goodbye and watched me enter the airport.  Once I walked into the airport a sudden sense of anxiety fell on me.  I just wanted to skip ahead to being in Assisi so I wouldn’t have to deal with the security, the layover, or even the flying. I knew I would be better when I got to Newark New Jersey where I would meet up with my roommate, Alex.  Once I got through security and to my gate I got myself some lunch and settled in for the 2 hour wait for boarding my 1 PM (Chicago time) flight.  While I was sitting at the gate I saw that my flight was delayed 10 minutes. No big deal I thought, but this 10 minute delay turned into a 2 hour delay. It wasn’t even for weather in Chicago, the weather was fantastic! The delay was for Weather in Newark. I texted Alex and my mom and called my dad to see what I would do. They suggested talking to the lady at the desk at the terminal to see if she could let Newark know that was coming to my flight and that I would be there as soon as humanly possible.  Alex also said that she would let as the people in the gate our flight was taking off from that I was on my way.  The big issue that I had was the fact that I only had an hour layover in Newark so I was most likely not going to make the flight.  When my flight from Chicago finally took off it was already after 3PM (Chicago time).  I was pretty sure that I was either going to make everyone from our flight have to wait on the plane or I was going to miss the flight.  The pilot said that he was going to try to fly as fast as he could so we could make it to Newark and hopefully make our flights.  We flew so fast that we made it to Newark by 5:40. My flight was supposed to leave at 5:25 so I was hoping that they waited a little for me.  With the fantastic texts I received from Alex’s boyfriend, Andrew, I knew exactly where I was supposed to go to get to the terminal and the gate.  When we got off the plane there was a lady that checked our tickets to see if the flight already left or if it was still at the gate.  Unfortunately my flight had already left.  It was all I could do not to breakdown from exhaustion of the day already and from all of the added stress I had.  She told me to go to terminal C gate 99 to see what flight I could get on to take me to Rome.  The weird thing about Newark is that you have to go outside and take a bus from terminal to terminal.  I was not looking forward to that bus ride.  When I got on the bus my dad called me and said that he and my mom called Dr. Checca and asked him what I was supposed to do.  He said that I had to be firm but nice and tell them that I had to be on the next flight to Tome and that I had to be there before 11 Am the next day Rome time (6 Am Indiana time).  When I told this to the lady at the desk helping me all she said was that that was not going to happen.  She put me on the next flight that was going to go to Rome.  The catch was that it wasn’t a direct flight to Rome and it didn’t get in until 2 PM in Rome (8AM in Indiana).  This was terrible to hear.  I needed to be in Rome before 11 AM so I could make it to the group and get on our bus to Assisi.  I took the tickets and had to rush over to the gate because the plane was leaving in 20 minutes.  When I texted my parents and told them that I wasn’t going to be there in time for the bus to Assisi they freaked out.  I told them to call Checca and email me what I was supposed to do.  I then turned off my phone for the last time until I return to the states in December.  The flight I was now on was going from Newark to Zurich, Switzerland. In Zurich I would have a delay for a few hours before I would finally fly to Rome.  On this flight I sat next to the most adorable old man.  He was flying to Cairo to visit some people.  The best thing about the old man was that he reminded me of my granddad.  He was so sweet to me and it was just like he was taking care of me.  He was afraid that he was going to miss his flight to Cairo because the flight to Zurich was a little delayed taking off because something had to be looked at on the plane and they needed to make sure we would be ok flying to Zurich.  The other highlight of this flight was the fact that the headrest in front of your seat had your own personal TV screen so you could watch whatever you wanted that they had showing.  I took full advantage of this watching The Big Bang Theory and The Hangover both twice.  It was fantastic.  I even got a few hours of sleep.  When we landed in Zurich, I had to go through and get my passport stamped for entering the EU.  This is always intimidating to me.  The man that did mine didn’t say anything to me which I took as a good thing.  They just intimidate me so much.  Everything was fine and I made it through with nothing wrong and went to the part of the airport for flights that went from Zurich to other cities within Europe.  The next bad thing was that they didn’t tell you where your gate was until an hour before your flight.  This was very frustrating to me.  I just wanted to get to my gate, check my email, and write everything I needing to know down in my IPod so I would know how to make it to wherever everyone else was in Assisi.  I decided to check my email. This was 5 euros down the drain already fro internet, but it was needed. I needed to know where I was supposed to go and what I needed to do.  I go on my email with about 10 emails from my parents.  I read each one with different facts, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.  One of the email addresses included was for one of my dad’s friends who was also a doctor. Dr. Borelli had a cousin who was a travel agent in Rome.  All I could think was that maybe Alex and I could use her to find hostels for where we were going to travel to and maybe a cheap flight to London.  I finally made it to the email from my mom which gave instructions about what to do if my suitcases do not make it to Rome and how I was supposed to make it to Assisi.  There was also a note in it that said someone from the Rome Program might be there to help my when I get into Rome.  I wrote down the phone number and the address to Hotel Tiziano, the name of where we were staying in Assisi, and the directions on how to make it to Assisi.  With all the stress I had built up I was not hungry even though I knew that I needed to eat something because I needed the energy.  I ended up eating some fruit and drinking a bottle of water.  When I was done eating I window shopped a little to pass the time.  Finally they said what gate I had to go to for my flight and I booked it over to it.  I had to go through more security when I got close to the gate but that was nothing.  I ended up being the first one to the gate and I settled in with my laptop for the next 30 minutes checking my email and looking at facebook to pass the time.  Finally it was time to get on the plane.  It was almost like a free for all on who got on the plane first which really annoyed me.  I figured that they would have some form of system to getting everyone on the plane but there wasn’t.  This flight was only about 2 and a half hours.  We landed a little after 2 PM (Rome time) and I headed off to see if my bags were here.  I stood at the place to get your bags for about 45 minutes to an hour hoping that my suitcases were here.  Surprise, Surprise they didn’t show up.  When I saw a worker talking to another woman from USA about her missing bag i asked him where I needed to go to tell them where to send my bags.  When I got there I had to wait in a huge line for about 2 hours and 45 minutes before it was my turn to find out where my bags were and tell them where to send them.  It turned out that they were still in Newark.  This did not surprise me at all.  I told them to send them to Hotel Tiziano and gave them the phone number so they could call them and find out what to do with my bags.  When I was finally done there I went through customs and looked to see if there was anyone with a sign that said anything about Saint Mary’s, the Rome Program, or Regina Mauck.  Sadly there was no one there to help me out.  So I headed to the train by myself and hoped that I could handle the trains alone.  I had to buy two train tickets when I made it to the train in the airport.  One took me from the airport to the main train station while the other took me to Assisi.  The first train only took about 30 minutes so it wasn’t too bad.  When I finally found the platform where I had to get on the next train I found out that I needed to validate my ticket by putting it in a yellow machine attached to the wall.  When I tried to do it the machine decided not to work.  Some lady tried her ticket too and tried to help me but when it didn’t work for either on us we went to a conductor who just signed the ticket and got on the train.  I hoped that this train wouldn’t take very long but I knew that it would.  When 2 hours went by and I hadn’t seen the Assisi stop I asked a man who just got on the train if the Assisi stop had already passed.  Luckily he spoke some English and had a list of all of the train stops.  He told me that it was the next train stop and I was slightly relieved that I hadn’t missed my stop.  When I got off at the Assisi stop the man told me to be careful and have a fun time in Assisi and I thanked him for the help.  Once I was in Assisi I had to take a taxi to La Cittadella which was where we were staying until Sunday.  I found a taxi and he said he could take me but when I asked him if he took credit card he said no and I had to use the rest of the euros with me for the cab.   It took about 15 minutes on twisting and turning Italian roads before we were there.  I thanked him graciously and gave him the money and made my way into La Cittadella.  When I got to the front desk I told the man working there that I was with the Saint Mary’s Rome Program and asked him where I was supposed to go.  He asked if I was Regina and when I said yes he gave me my room number and the extra set of keys to it.  He then took me down to the basement where the dining room was and they were eating supper.  It was about 8:15 and when I made it down there I was greeted not only by Dr. Prebys and Miss McHugh but also by Alex.  The day was so draining but I was finally hungry and Dr. Prebys gave me a seat and told the people serving dinner to start me on the first course.  Through dinner I told everyone at my table about the traumatic past 2 days and herd so many I’m so sorry’s and I wish we could have done something.  When dinner was done Alex showed me the way to where the sleeping area of La Cittadella was. Outside, up two huge staircases and one very steep hill was the building where our rooms were. I basically died walking up to the building carrying just my carryon I couldn’t have imagined doing it with any more than what I had.  When we got in the building I was so excited that my room was number 136 and I thought I was on the first floor.  I then found out that I was actually on the third floor but luckily there was an elevator because I was not looking forward to climbing 4 flights of stairs up to the third floor.  When I finally got to my room I couldn’t get it unlocked so I had to fine one of the other girls to do it for me.  I was so excited to finally be in a room with a bed I just couldn’t take it.  I unpacked a few of my things before my roommates for Assisi came in the room.  I was in a triple with one girl from Saint Mary’s and one girl from Villanova.  I told them my story of my draining 2 days and they told me what I missed while traveling. It didn’t seem like I missed too much and they said if there was any day to miss it was today which made me feel better.  I ended my night with getting to know the girls a little and taking a much needed shower before falling asleep at 10:30 and sleeping until 7:30 the next morning.
Assisi day 1 (Thursday): Today we went to La Rocca in Assisi. La Rocca is a castle on the highest point of Assisi. You literally have to climb up a mountain to get to it. The view from it was completely worth it though. The views were completely breathtaking! The climb was totally worth it when we could see all of Assisi down the hills. After La Rocca we had orientation for the Rome Program. This was the longest time of just sitting in one room listening to someone talk I think I have ever been to. After about 2 hours I was ready to be done. This lasted until 1PM (Rome time) and then we had dinner (aka lunch in America). After dinner we had a lot of free time to just explore Assisi. Alex and I ended up going with the boys from Villanova to see the church of San Rufinio (I think that was the saint). It was really cool. Part of the floor was see through so you could see into the crypt under the church. You could go into the crypt but that cost some money and I'm trying to save as much money as I can so I can travel as much as possible. After that Alex and I walked around and looked into some of the little shops that were between La Cittadella (our hotel) and San Rufinio. We left the boys alone for some “guy time” so they could bond some because they are rooming together for the next 3 months. After walking around some and talking a lot it was time for our half of the alphabet to go to registration for our classes and to find out when our finals will be. This was with Dr. Prebys, the lady in charge of the Rome Program, and she is very intimidating. She makes me a little nervous when I talk to her because she has such a high position in the staff of Saint Mary’s. I was the first one to go with the second half of the alphabet which was good because I got it out of the way fast. I ended up taking philosophy 110, anthropology 142, art history 251, religious studies 233, Italian 111, and lectures and tours. My class schedule is very uneven though. I have class from 11:10-7:00 on Monday with a break for lunch from 12:42-2:15, from 9:35-11:35 on Tuesday, from 8:00-9:30 and 2:20-5:25 on Wednesday, and from 8:00-11:35 on Thursday. One of the best things is no class on Friday. Yes that is correct we do not have class on Friday here in good old Roma! The first 4 weeks we will though because we need to make up a week of class that we cannot fit in without getting visas for everyone going even one semester. After registration I went up to Casa Franchi (the building where our rooms were) to get my laptop and be able to email my family and tell them that I was in Assisi with the rest of the Rome program. The only downside to getting wifi in Europe is that none of it is free. I had to pay 5 euros for 24 hours of wifi just to be able to email my family and check my facebook. Totally a rip off.  After that I just sat in the lobby of Cittadella for a few hours talking with a bunch of the other girls about everything that had happened to me over the past few days. I don’t know how many times I have said what happened to me. The story is almost getting old. Then we had supper at about 8 PM (Rome time). After supper I went with Alex and some other girls up to the piazza to talk and see some of the sights at night. It was a really fun night hanging out with the girls and getting to know some of them more.
Assisi day 2 (Friday): Today we split up in the two halves of the alphabet and went on 2 different tours. The first half went to the basilica of San Francisco and my half went to San Damiano. San Damiano is a small church that St. Francis rebuilt when he herd God telling him to rebuild his church. It was also the place where St. Clair died. It was part way down in the valley outside of Assisi. The walk was really difficult too. It was straight down hill on cobblestone and the way back up was almost worse. It wouldn’t have been as bad if it wasn’t so hot out. After we had dinner we had a few more hours of free time and I wondered around Assisi with Alex. We ended up finding a little shop that had a sign advertising for free wifi so we totally used it. How could we pass up a chance to check our facebooks and email? At 5 PM we had room selection and that didn’t end up as Alex and I wanted but its going to be good. Alex and I wanted to be in a double together but since our room pick numbers were so close to the end all the doubled were gone before we ended up in a quad with 2 girls that also wanted to be in a double together. One of the girls was one of my roommates I Assisi and she was really nice and Alex knew the other girl from her Italian class and she said she was really nice. The room will be good and if not its only for 3 months so that’s not really a problem. Then we wondered more until we had supper. After supper I went with a bunch of girls and got some gelato then we wondered to a random part of Assisi and just talked for like 3 hours. It was great to just have some time to chill out and talk to some girls for a while. Unlike some of the other girls and the guys Alex and I really didn’t want to go out and waste all of our money on drinking and everything. I would rather save up my money to travel.
Assisi day 3 (Saturday): After breakfast I went with my half of the alphabet to the basilica of San Francisco while the other half went to San Damiano. The basilica was so amazing. It was one of the biggest churches I had ever seen. The frescoes were huge and so pretty. The frescoes told the life of St. Francis. It was just too beautiful to comprehend and to explain. After we were done there we were led to the main piazza and we talked a little about the main piazza. When the tour was done we had about an hour of free time before dinner. Alex and I decided to go in a little church we found in the main piazza. It was so beautiful! I know I keep saying everything was beautiful but it’s so true. I even took a picture of the pipe organ there for my mom to see. After dinner we had a 7 hour break. This was the longest amount of free time I have ever had in my life. Over this free time Alex and I walked up through all of the little shops in Assisi and walked all over. We also took the time to budget out our money. This was both good and bad. By doing this I had to decide that I can’t go to London but I also figured out that I can survive here on my own her which was good. There also was a peace festival going on this weekend in Assisi. Because of this there was a band that was going through the streets of Assisi. This band was so cool. It just came out of nowhere and they met up in the main piazza. It was amazing! After 7 hours of nothing it was finally time for supper. At supper Miss McHugh told us that it was the guy who served us our dinner birthday so we invited him to go out with us to celebrate his birthday. We even got Miss McHugh to go out with us. It was so much fun even though Alex and I stayed just for a little bit then we walked part of the way up to the castle to see the city at night one last time before we left. After that we talked in the courtyard for a little bit then went back to our rooms for bed. One of my roommates and I actually ended up talking in our room for like 2 hours after we turned the light off. It was nice because she is one of my roommates in Rome so it was good to get to know her a little before.
Assisi day 4 (Sunday): Today was our last morning in Assisi. We had to be out of our building with all of our stuff ready to go to the bus by 8:15 this morning. We took all of our stuff to the bus then had about 45 minutes to kill before a special mass just for the Rome program. The mass was in a small chapel by our hotel. It was nice because it was in English for us. It was said by one of the priests we will have with the Rome program. After mass we found out that we weren’t leaving until after dinner at 1 PM so we had like 3 hours to kill. This time instead of going up to any of the shops we just stayed by La Cittadella. I went inside with some of my new friends and we all ended up falling asleep on the couches in the lobby. We slept for about a half hour then just sat there and talked. We were afraid that we wouldn’t be able to leave Assisi because of the peace march. During dinner Dr. Prebys went around to every table and told us that we had to leave right at 2 so we could get out of Assisi before the peace march get there. We ate as quickly as possible, thanked the workers and rushed out the door. When we got outside there were a bunch of taxis around and they were trying to get us in them. We didn’t know that we were supposed to do, but when Miss McHugh came outside she told us to get in the taxis and said that they were taking us to the bus because it had to move to the bus station. On our way to the bus station one of the girls in my taxi said she felt like the Vontraps escaping from the Nazis in The Sound of Music. It was hilarious. Once we made it to the bus station and on the bus we set off to Rome. We got one final look at Assisi as we drove by and couldn’t believe that we actually made it up to La Rocca. It was literally on top of the mountain. Almost everyone fell asleep on the bus except for me, 2 of the boys and 2 other girls. We told the boys about Saint Mary’s and they told us about Villanova. It was nice to get to know more about Villanova because I never knew anything about it. After 2 and a half hours on the bus we finally made it to the outskirts of Rome. We saw the old Olympic building they built when the Olympics were there last and the Tiber River. When we were almost to our hotel Dr. Prebys told us to look to the right and we would see St. Peters square. Where we saw it the whole bus gasped in unison. It was the perfect reaction to the fabulous sight. When we got to the hotel we were supposed to take our carry on up to our room and come back down to get our suitcases. When I came down to get my suitcases I couldn’t find them. It turns out that they still hadn’t delivered them to Hotel TIziano. I talked to the man at the desk and he said that he would call the airport for me. So I went back up to my room and started to wash my clothes that I wore in Assisi so I had something to wear for the next couple days. A little later Miss McHugh took us on a tour to where Pascucci’s, the school, the offices, and the library so we would know for class tomorrow. After that she took us down a few more blocks to where the Pantheon actually was. It is legit in our back yard! It was so amazing to see it again. Then she told us this fantastic place to get some square pizza for cheap. I also told her that my suitcases hadn’t come yet and she told me to keep her updated. After we got pizza and went to a grocery store so I would have a toothbrush until my stuff got here we went back to our room. Alex, Caitlin, and Lindsey finished unpacking and I paid for 24 hours of internet so I could skype my family. I skyped my family at 10 PM (4 PM eastern time). It was so good to see my mom, dad and little sister. I was a little mad that my brothers didn’t come over to talk to me. We didn’t talk for too long because I’m trying to conserve internet to see how long it lasts me.

Ciao bella!
